Zorlu Energy Cooling Tower Seismic Assessment

The Cooling Tower Building of the Zorlu Energy Kızıldere Geothermal Power Plant was assessed against the Turkish Regulation on Buildings to be Constructed in Earthquake Zones, and a strengthening design was prepared. The building consists of two blocks, A and B, separated by an expansion joint, with a reinforced concrete frame structural system. A detailed measured survey was carried out and survey drawings were produced for every floor. The structure is located in a first-degree seismic zone. Boreholes were drilled on the building plot to determine the soil properties, and the number of core samples required by the regulation was taken and compression tested in the laboratory. Reinforcement was identified in accordance with the regulation by removing the concrete cover on columns and beams and by using a rebar scanner. The analyses concluded that the Cooling Tower Building required strengthening. Strengthening designs and a project-specific technical specification for the strengthening works were prepared.
